East Coast Road Trippin’

Evening all!

So after spending 3 weeks in Sydney eating and drinking waaaay too much, Katherine and I flew to Cairns to begin our road trip.

We stayed in Gilligan’s for a couple of nights (partied again, whoops) and then went on our way to collect our campervan.

Everyone I would like you to meet Medusa, our trusted steed for this epic journey:

She was basic but she didn’t do wrong by us at all!

First stop on our road trip was Mission Beach (no I didn’t skydive there as I am a complete wuss) and we stayed in a caravan park right on the beach.

Here is Kat setting up for dinner:

As we were on a budget, dinner couldn’t be anything fancy so Katherine came up  with the genius idea to make nasi goreng. Katherine had spent five months in Asia and Indonesia prior to this trip so she was filled with new recipes.

Here is our recipe:

  • 100g zucchini
  • 100g white onion
  • 100g mushrooms
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 cups of brown rice
  • 2 eggs
  • Sriracha (optional)
  • Parmesan (optional)

To cook this you just need to sauté the veg and garlic and cook the rice separately. Then combine the two and garnish with a fried egg. Simple!

It took so long to cook in a handheld stove it was pitch black by the time we got to eat! Here is the finished product:

We then went on our merry way and visited these places: Townsville, Airlie Beach (where we ate this meal again), the Whitsundays,  Rockhampton, Bouldercombe, Agnes Water, 1770, Hervey Bay, Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach and Noosa.

Most of the journey we lived off of porridge and tuna sandwiches but on the odd occasion we would treat ourselves.

One night just after we left Agnes Water we decided to go into what looked like an absolute dive, so I had wet hair and a bikini on, whilst Katherine was fashioning full on PJs. We walked in thinking nothing of our appearance when we were greeted by the Canadian host and owner! He seemed a bit stunned as to our appearance, and it made sense because, as we looked around, it was actually a lovely place! Katherine was so ashamed and wanted to leave, but I made her stay as I was starving! So we sat and enjoyed one gourmet pizzas whilst looking like absolute idiots.

Once we had arrived in Hervey Bay, we made friends with two English lads that also had a campervan. They suggested a full on Aussie BBQ and we couldn’t say no! Here’s what was made for us:

The food was fantastic, however as Kat and I had been living off porridge the whole time, all the protein did not take too well to our stomachs. Lesson learned!

The final place where we ate out was in Noosa and we had Australian Tapas in a restaurant called Flux. I absolutely loved this place and spent so much because the food was that good! I also asked if they were looking for staff as I was that enamoured by the food!

Here’s a list of what we had:

  • Crispy prawns with a sea urchin butter and garnished with caviar
  • Seared scallops with black pudding and pork belly
  • Pan fried chorizo with a smokey onion jam

I didn’t take any photos of the food as it was inhaled. Literally, yum!

As we were driving ever closer to Brisbane, our final stop, I made sure we ended the trip with one last eating experience; strawberry picking! I forced Katherine around the farm to pick some strawberries in the beautiful sun. Here’s a selfie with the fruits of our labour:

We snacked on these sweet little treats and approached Brisbane.

The next step to the adventure awaits!
